A great size garden, with wishes for a ‘tropical feel’, along with many of photographs of the Ventnor botanical garden as my brief!
After agreeing on a design, the major hurdle we had to overcome was the heaviness of the soil, as many tropical plants would show great distaste at such cold wet conditions. A large amount of grit, Isle of Wight compost and manure eventually lighten the soil. The large specimens of palms and bamboos thrived in the fertile soil and with the vibrant coloured perennials and annuals, the garden felt exciting. By the end of the summer we were rather pleased with the way in which everything had filled out.
